so… idk why this is happening. but i recently watched a video called “damsel in distress: Part 1 - Tropes vs Women in Video Games” and.. look before i start, i don’t want to get any “you’re just a gamer” bull shit. i’m tired of people who don’t play games and don’t know much about gaming history telling me my opinion is wrong because this involves gaming, even the creator of this video, feministfrequency, admits she’s a gamer and grew up on nintendo. she explained a game called dinosaur land that was never released. this game would star a female animal character, but was later changed into a star fox game with fox (a male) as the main character and made the former female main become the new damsel for him to save. but what she failed to mention was that this change was because rare had designed characters that looked a lot like star fox characters. she also failed to mention that the star fox game this became was one of the worst star fox games ever. she explained how super mario’s plot is stupid because it’s about a man who saves the princess. which yeah, it is stupid and simple. but even nintendo acknowledges that, it’s part of what makes the game. and i understand that this is dis-empowering to the women, i get that. but it was used at a time where nobody really had a problem with these sort of things and it was just a boy’s fantasy. ok, i see where she’s coming from sort of, but mario is really so wholesome and simple that i’d say it’s great for anyone to play. when i need a game to play with a girl who doesn’t play very many games, i always bust out mario because it’s great for people who don’t normally play games as well as people who play a lot. to me, the whole princess being kidnapped thing is just sort of a call back to the past. but i still get where she’s coming from. i mean yeah, nintendo does do this a lot. but she didn’t even once mention one of nintendo’s most successful franchises, metroid. a game where you play as a girl. a girl wearing a robot suit. in fact, the big reveal at the end of the first game was you find out samas was a girl all along. it’s now known by a lot of gamers that samas is a girl, but i remember playing super smash bros. with people and so many would refer to samas as a man. also, she was giving zelda some grief, and then at the same time, making the princess zelda look like more of a bad ass then a damsel. i just don’t get where you people are coming from when you say games are dominated by men. it’s not because we exclude you. there is a real problem with sexism in this country, but if you cry wolf at video games, it’s not really going to help your cause, just waste your time. there are girl characters in video games, just not always the lead, and when they are the lead, people complain that they are over sexualized anyway. you really can’t win with girl characters. she also brought up more games that use a damsel in distress as the main story plot. yeah but those games do horrible because they have a dumb over used plot. and not girls i respect are trying to tell me how i’m still sexist because i support something they don’t know about or understand and then won’t hear me out on. look. there are some sexist elements to some games, just like there are in some movies and in some books. but there are other games that don’t have these things and some that are just empowering to women in general, like metroid. so… so shut up and stick to what you actually do know about instead of trying to tackling something you think is bad because you heard something some where. games provide culture, let you into some one elses world. the creator of super meat boy uses a girl named bandage girl that you must rescue. it’s because the boy is made of meat, and she is made of bandage. the boy needs the girl. he saves her not just because he loves her. but he needs her as well. that’s because the creator of the game would have probably killed himself without his wife. now, women can actually relate to that. he made it a boy saving a girl because he’s a boy. but women can still relate to that feeling. it’s just annoying gals. stahp
fbi officials raided the mobile home (yes, really) of a minnesota man who is a member of an unnamed militia group. buford rogers, 24, was apprehended friday with molotov cocktails, pipe bombs and several firearms.
